PORT FAIRY BELFAST LIONS CLUB INC - NEWS & NOTES AND TIDBITS.
Get the latest on what Lions are doing - Locally and Nationally.
Lions projects and activitiesWe are moved into a very busy period with a number of activities and projects underway.
Our Centennial project is progressing well. The bluestone seat, kindly donated by Bamstone is almost finished and some of our members have been working hard to prepare the area where it will be installed, as well as making repairs to the shelters and signage at the Port Fairy Lions Park.
We provided the Sunday BBQ at the Warrnambool Convention and also for a group of volunteers who were revamping a garden and kitchen for a local family.
Two of our members participated in the Operation Friendship scheme, hosting two Lions from the UK, Stephen and Louise Brown. The club members showed their usual hospitality, putting on a meet and greet BBQ, and there was an exchange of club banners and pins.
We are providing support at St John's Church Strawberry Fair on Sunday 26 November, this will involve helping to set up and take down the stalls and running a spinning wheel.
Melbourne Cup Eve DinnerWe also held our annual Melbourne Cup Eve dinner on Monday 6 November. What a great night, everyone got into the action. Our Roy Stokie Cup winner was Lion Ann Maree Marslen. Lion Wendy Hunter won the Ladies' Fashion on the field and Men's Fashion Winner was Lion John McIntyre. Thank you to Lion Peter Down for organising the event, Lions Lady Gail Down for the beautiful flower decorations for the tables and to all those who helped to make the event successful, we couldn't have done it without you. We would also like to thank our very generous sponsors, Decked out on Bank, Sheehan's Meat, The Red Hen and Mclean's Pharmacy.
Youth of the Year QuestOn Saturday 14 October 2017, the Port Fairy-Belfast Lions Club held it's annual Youth of the Year quest. We had a wonderful day listening to our four very articulate and interesting young people on a range of topics including homelessness, immunisation, organ donations and living a life without limits, and they shared their thoughts on climate change and lowering the voting age.
We would like to congratulate all four participants, Sienna Crabbmor; Caleb Stewart; Bonnie Williamson and Sami Zehir. They were excellent representatives for their schools. Unfortunately not all could be winners this time, but they all showed great promise for the future, and we certainly hope that some of them will be able to participate again next year.
We are delighted to announce that Sami Zehir took out both the best Public Speaking award and the Overall Winner award. Sami had researched his topic of homeless well and delivered it with confidence. Congratulations Sami.
We would also like to thank Tatiana Resk Wilson, Hester Woodrup and Tony Bawden for doing such an excellent job as judges - not an easy task. A special thank you goes to Lion Jim Kent who was our guest speaker and gave us a great insight into the history of the Youth of the Year Quest in Port Fairy.
Finally thank you to all Youth of the Year committee members and other Port Fairy-Belfast members who helped with the preparations for the day, especially Lions Geoff Hodgkinson and Stew Hunter, who were our timekeepers.
